Go! Cruisereader is off and running. It’s been a great year of research and writing. That’s the fun part. Now we get to spread the word. Tell every traveler or aspiring wanderer you know to start their adventures with cruisereader.com.
There was an “Ah, Ha!” moment that started all this. I was lucky to be living in Paris, France, in the 1979-81 era. I had just settled into my one-bedroom apartment on Rue d’Assas, about 100 yards west of the Luxembourg Gardens. Tough duty. Learning a new city is an intimidating task. I knew I needed some help. So, off I trundled to the famous William Smith Bookstore, across from the Tuileries. I picked up the very concise, three-volume Penguin History of France, and inhaled it in short order. Then, as I wandered through the city, the street names meant more to me. Some were named for Napoleon’s generals, politicians, artists, and other French notables. It occurred to me that most Frenchmen made these connections, practically without thinking. It was like a big in-joke. They understood all these references, while the tourists hardly recognized any of them. I thought it would be great to know enough about everyplace to get the in-jokes. So, I’ve created cruisereader.com to give you some coaching, so you get the in-jokes, too.
And, I want to hear from you, as well. Let me know of the books, movies, songs, anything that helped you have a deeper appreciation for some great destination you have really enjoyed. Let’s share it with the world. I’ll post it on the blog and work it into the applicable essay.
I still have some destination essays to complete. The European river cruise destinations and South America are both big projects with a huge breadth of topics, themes, and literature. I’m already on the case. However, there are enough essays here to cover most of the primary itineraries and to introduce cruisereader.com to you.
So, pick a bucket list itinerary and join the fun. Let me know what you think, and send along any suggestions you have.
Bon Voyage!
